“Brace yourselves for an exciting new journey in November,” enthuses Andrew Macnamara, operations director at MTE. The Harmony gold mine, Doornkop in Randfontein, and the Odendaalsrus area near Welkom, home to the Harmony Tshepong and Phakisa gold mines, will be a new focus for MTE.

MTE will host these smaller, intimate tradeshows focussed on gold mines as a combo tour, on 19 November and Thursday 21 November, respectively.

Doornkop is a deep-level, single-shaft operation and while a mature operation, Doornkop still has 15 years life-of-mine remaining and is focused on narrow-reef conventional mining of the gold-bearing conglomerate South Reef. Ore is processed at the Doornkop plant, which uses the carbon-in-pulp process to extract gold.1

Odendaalsrus, is the oldest gold mining town in the district. “When gold was found in 1946, Odendaalsrus earned its place on the map, attracting a number of settlers who wanted to be a part of the Gold Rush. This is where the richest Gold Reef in the World, was discovered.”2 There are a number of gold mines in and around Odendaalsrus, including Harmony’s Tshepong and Phakisa mines, to be invited to the second leg of the tour.

Tshepong North is a mature deep-level underground mining operation using conventional undercut mining in the Basal Reef while the B Reef is exploited as a high-grade secondary reef. Tshepong South exploits the Basal reef too, with the B Reef mined as a high-grade secondary reef aswell and uses the conventional undercut and opencut mining method. Rock from Tshepong South is transported via a railveyor system to Nyala shaft, from where it is hoisted to surface. Mining is conducted at depths of 1 500m to 2 300m. Ore mined at both operations is processed at the Harmony One plant, with gold recovered using the gold cyanide leaching process.
