Mining and Technical Exhibitions (MTE) has celebrated a first in its more than 30-year history with the addition of a plumbing exhibition tagged onto its Kathu event that took place on 10 July.

July was the month that took MTE on its combo tour of the Northern Cape. MTE made its first stop in Hotazel on 8 July. This small area is a bush-covered and dusty Northern Cape town that has become known for its manganese deposits. Hotazel’s temperatures reach an average of 31°C in the summertime, no doubt contributing to the town’s quirky name.

The event played host to 80 exhibitors, with 235 people who stopped in to take a look and learn more about the fascinating industry they are involved in. The exhibition was a sensation and was attended by engineering management, mine management, mechanical and electrical engineers, instrumentation technicians and many more.

“The Kalahari mornings are freezing,” says Andrew Macnamara, MTE director, “However, the daytime temperatures were comfortable, making it a good environment to network in.”

This year at Kathu, MTE was joined by its sister exhibition, Plumbing’s Travelling Exhibition (PTE) for the first time ever. This new collaboration saw an abundance of the familiar orange and yellow tents crop up in the Northern Cape iron ore capital.

A fun filled golf day on 9 July kicked off the show, providing excellent networking opportunities. The MTE and PTE shows both took place on 10 July.

The exhibition saw 135 exhibitors set up their stands and ready themselves to welcome the 562 visitors who made their way through the tents as they discovered the latest tech, newest products and innovations in the mining sector.

“It was a fantastic exhibition, foot traffic was great and there was such a buzz,” says Macnamara. “We saw a lot of interaction with management, engineers, safety and instrumentation employees and contractors to the local mines.”
