This year promises to be a year of great opportunity for Mining and Technical Exhibitions (MTE) and its valued exhibitors and visitors, particularly when it comes to the gold commodity. Share prices of gold miners strengthened significantly during 2024 on the back of gold price gains, and MTE will be hosting several gold mining focussed expos in 2025, starting on 13 February with its second on site expo on the Moab Khotsong Gold Mine, after 2024’s debut event.

Last year’s expo held at Moab Khotsong Gold Mine boasted 40 exhibiting companies and 245 visitors.

“Last year the show boasted 40 exhibiting companies and 245 visitors,” says Andrew Macnamara, operations director at MTE, including the Engineering, Mine and the Minerals Resource management teams, foremen, Health and Safety and Plant executives.

Harmony acquired this deep-level mine near the towns of Orkney and Klerksdorp from AngloGold Ashanti Limited in March 2018 and has been producing gold since 2003. The mine is Harmony’s second-largest gold operation, contributing to approximately 14% to total group production.1

The mine plays an important part in Harmony’s portfolio – the company reported in its Operational update for the three months ended 30 September 2024 that underground “recovered grades remain high at 6.32g/t from 6.29g/t, mainly due to excellent recovered grades at Mponeng and Moab Khotsong.”

Harmony is currently building a fully-owned 100MW solar plant – funded largely through a R1.5-billion green loan facility secured in June 2022 –  at the Harmony Moab Khotsong Operations.

By 4 December 2024, the company had received all required Environmental Authorisations and permits to commence construction of this photovoltaic (PV) renewable energy phase 2a project. The project consists of three solar PV plants with a combined peak capacity of 100MW and an anticipated total capacity of approximately 84MVA. Construction is expected to be completed in F26.
