Recognising the critical need to enhance emergency readiness within its community, Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen Mine has taken a proactive step and has organised free Basic First Aid Training for the 12th grade pupils at Langeberg High School in Olifantshoek in the Northern Cape, with the goal of equipping these young individuals to be the frontline of assistance in times of crisis.

In the race against time to save lives during emergencies, every second counts. Rural and isolated communities often bear the brunt of disasters due to the arduous journey emergency responders must undertake to reach them. Sishen Mine’s commitment goes beyond mere sponsorship of first aid training, which aims to cultivate a cadre of trained individuals ready to serve their community during emergencies. These efforts not only impart valuable life skills to pupils but also directly supply the community with a dedicated group of young responders.

As part of the programme, students received hampers containing first aid kits, rechargeable lights for household illumination during power outages, and scientific calculators to help with their educational pursuit for the remainder of the year.

Highlighting the initiative’s impact, Olifantshoek ward councillor, Thataetsile Motsoare emphasised its benefits for the community. “Our town, with its informal settlements relying on fire for household needs, faces particular challenges. The first aid training and awareness about veld fires received by students will be invaluable, especially with winter approaching. This initiative will undoubtably make a significant difference in our community.”
