Background
Saiccor Mill can be found 50 km south of the port of Durban in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The mill specialises in production of Sappi Dissolving Pulp, which has a wide variety of uses including textiles, industrial and pharmaceutical applications. The mill has the capacity to produce approximately 800,000 tons of elemental chlorine free (ECF) dissolving pulp (DP) per annum, mostly for the export market. This pulp is sustainably produced and the plant supplies jobs for over 1 300 people in the area, providing a boost to the local economy.
Unlike many synthetic raw materials, the product supplied by Sappi Dissolving Pulp is produced from a natural and renewable resource. The timber consumption of Saiccor Mill and Ngodwana Mills is comprised primarily of eucalyptus hardwoods. These fast-growing trees are grown in relatively close proximity to the mills, which contribute to the business’ position as a competitive producer of dissolving pulp.
Project Vulindlela, started in 2018, is a multi-billion-rand expansion project to boost Saiccor Mill’s dissolving pulp (DP) capacity by 110,000 tons per annum. 2 000 additional jobs were created to build the expansion, which is one of the largest of its kind in the world. The expansion will also reduce the plant’s impact on the environment through the use of a closed loop system.
