Rustenburg is one of the major mining areas in SA and is home to several large platinum mining operations, as well as the world’s largest platinum refinery and many processing and smelting plants.
The Rustenburg Platinum Mines complex is owned by Sibanye-Stillwater after purchasing the section from Anglo American Platinum in 2016. The operation is located north-east of Rustenburg and Kroondal, approximately 126km north west of Johannesburg. The mines consist of shallow to intermediate depth PGM mines which are accessed via incline and vertical shafts. Of the eleven vertical shafts, three are currently in operation – this is in addition to two incline shafts. As the operation has been in production since the 1940s the modernisation of its infrastructure is varied, and a combination of mechanised equipment and conventional mining methods is employed.
Impala Platinum Mines has operations on the Western limb of the Bushveld Complex. The complex is 96% owned by Implats and consists of a nine-shaft mining complex and also includes concentrating and smelting plants. Conventional breast mining is used and both the Merensky and UG2 reefs are mined. Base and precious metals are sent to the refineries in Springs, east of Johannesburg.
Several other major mining operations can be found in the area, such as Kroondal Platinum Mines and Royal Bafokeng Platinum Mines. While platinum and PGMs are the main focus, other minerals such as chrome, copper and silver are mined as well.
As many of these operations have been in existence for many years, there is still room for modernisation and suppliers who can provide mechanisation and digitalisation solutions would be suitable for this expo, in addition to suppliers servicing the PGMs industry.
