Background
Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal is home to several important mining and industrial operations including mining as well as the sugar, acid, harbour and paper & pulp industries. While MTE does specialise in the mining industry, we have expanded our exhibitions to include suppliers to the above industries as well.
Significant mining operations include Richards Bay Minerals, South32’s Hillside Aluminium smelter and KZN Sands.
Richards Bay Minerals is a subsidiary of Rio Tinto in South Africa and the mine produces ilmenite from mineral sand deposits found in dunes along the coast. Other products include zircon, rutile, iron and slag. RBM currently operates four mines in the Zulti North lease area, a mineral separation plant and smelting facility. The Zulti North ore body grade is declining hence the Zulti South mine is required to maintain the output of high-margin zircon and rutile. The USD463-million (Rio Tinto share USD343-million) investment, currently on suspension, is planned to sustain Richards Bay Minerals (RBM’s) current capacity and extend mine life.
South32 is an aluminium smelter that produces high-quality aluminium metal primarily for the domestic and export markets. The capacity of the plant makes South32 the largest producer of primary aluminium in the southern hemisphere.
The Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT), which is in the Richards Bay harbour on the Indian Ocean, is the largest coal export facility in Africa. It is situated at one of the world’s deep-sea ports and is subsequently able to handle large ships and large volumes of coal.

As our previous exhibition illustrates, Richards Bay is an ideal area to incorporate all industries. Exhibitors should include suppliers in the sugar, harbour, paper and forestry sectors. Several sugar mills are dotted along the coastline and the Mondi paper mill is a massive operation, producing Baycel and Baywhite. Suppliers of heavy equipment suitable for mineral sand extraction as well as restoration would also be welcome, as well as systems and solutions for aluminium smelting.
