Background

Mponeng is a deep-level gold mine near the town of Carletonville, some 90km south-west of Johannesburg. The mine has been operational for over 30 years. The named changed to Mponeng Mine in 1999 and Harmony later acquired the operation in October 2020.

The orebody is extracted by means of mostly breast mining methods with associated waste mining in addition to the reef being extracted. To date only the VCR orebody was mined but extraction of gold from CLR ore started in 2020 from limited stopes opened up on the old Tau Tona lease area. Due to the nature of deep-level mines, a sequential grid mining structure is used to allow the operation some flexibility due to associated seismic activity at such deep levels.

The economic reef horizons are mined between 3 160m and 3 740m below surface, making it currently the deepest mine in the world. Future mining is planned to deepen the shaft bottom to 4 227m BMD On surface the ore is processed at the Mponeng gold plant. Ore mined at Mponeng is hoisted to the surface where it is processed and then treated and smelted at the Mponeng gold plant where gold is extracted using conventional carbon in pulp, electrowinning and smelting processes.

Since its acquisition in October 2020, Mponeng Mine has established itself as the third-largest contributor to gold production and the second-largest contributor to operating free cash flows. In FY21, Mponeng processed 683 000 tonnes, producing 5 446kg (175 092oz) of gold at 7.97g/t. Gold revenues totalled R4 750 million. The operation incurred cash operating costs of R2 902 million and capital expenditure of R493 million, mainly due to integration costs and ongoing development for plant optimisation.

Exhibitors we would like to see:

Those working in the latest technology for gold mining, automation, water management, net tensioners in stope and latest PPE technology. Other products and services in demand include conveyor systems, water/emulsion pumps, fire suppression systems as well as stoping and drilling rigs. Due to flooding of the shaft bottom, dewatering solutions are likely to be in demand
