Located in the North West province between Rustenburg and Brits, Mooinooi was initially a thriving boomtown following the discovery of PGMs and chrome reserves in the area. The town is still home to several mines, with the focus being on platinum group metals, palladium and chrome. Notable among these mines, are the well-known Marikana mining operations, located 8km away from Kroondal Platinum Mine, with both constituting part of the North West’s platinum belt. The operation includes both mining and processing and bulk tailings retreatment. A large mining complex with shallow to moderate depth, Marikana’s structure is divided as follows: five shafts are currently in operation (4Belt, K3, Saffy, Rowland/MK2 and E3), with several others currently under care and maintenance. Five concentrators provide a milling capacity reaching 600 000 tons/month. Once the base metals have been removed from the ore, the PGM-rich residue is then sent on to the Precious Metal Refinery (PMR) located in Brakpan to be smelted and refined further before the final product is ready. Marikana has been granted mining rights for the area until 2037 at present. Owned by Samancor, which was started in 1975, Western Chrome mine comprises of three underground mines, two surface beneficiation plants and two tailings re-treatment plants. The mine uses two underground methods namely conventional scraper mining and trackless mechanised mining. The main products of the mine are metallurgical and chemical concentrates. Tharisa Mine, in production since November 2009, is a shallow and large-scale open-pit PGM and chrome mine that has an estimated openpit life of approximately 17 years and an estimated further 40 years underground.
