Background
Kitwe is the second-largest city in terms of size and population in Zambia. It is also one of the most commercially and industrially developed areas in the country, alongside Ndola and Lusaka. It has a complex of mines on its north-western and western edges.
Mopani copper minerals has invested about USD1.3-billion in mining operations in Zambia. Their main operations are at Mufulira and Nkana. Both operations are underground, with the former comprising a mine, concentrator, smelter, concentrator and an acid plant while the latter consists of four mines and two concentrator plants.
Mopani has expanded these operations by sinking and equipping three new shafts, which were completed in 2018 in order to replace the ageing infrastructure at the complex which had been in operation since the 1930s. The Syclinorium and Mindola Deeps shafts were added to Nkana Mine and the Henderson Shaft was added to the Mufulira Mine. A new concentrator was also built at the Nkana site.
KCM has open-pit and underground mines at Nchanga and Konkola. The largest of the mine assets, Konkola, is the most northerly of the Copperbelt mines and is located 26 kilometres from Chingola. The mine has three operating shafts. Nchanga assets comprise open-pit and underground mining operations. KCM’s mining operations are heavily mechanised using surface drilling techniques, electric shovel loading and dump trucks.
NFCA currently mines at the Chambishi Main Mine and the Chambishi West Mine and is currently developing the Chambishi South-East Mine.

Exhibitors at all three Zambian expos should include companies that supply equipment or products to the copper mines, or that supply equipment or products that can be used in the copper mining process. Zambia is one of Africa’s biggest copper producers, so if you’re involved in that business, this is the expo for you. Products and services in demand in the area include PPE suppliers, fuel meter calibration, mill liners, OEM suppliers of bearings and filters, survey equipment, industrial lighting, cleaning chemicals and abrasives, oil filtration and purification and pump equipment.
