MTE Kathu 2024, Northern Cape

Loading Events

Kathu is the iron ore capital of the Northern Cape and home to several large iron ore and manganese mines, including Sishen, Khumani, Sedibeng and various smaller operations. The town is situated between Upington and Vryburg.

Sishen iron ore mine represents one of the largest iron ore reserves in South Africa, with an estimated 2.43 billion tonnes of ore grading 58.6% iron ore metal. It is Anglo American’s flagship iron ore operation and one of the largest open-pit mines in the world at around 14km in length. Premium fine ore is extracted with a lump to fine ratio of 60:40, compared to the world average of 30:70, meaning it is highly valued by steel producers. Traditional shovel and truck methods are used to mine the ore before it is transported to the beneficiation plant where it is crushed, screened and beneficiated. The operation also includes a jig plant which is the largest of its type in the world.

Khumani Iron Ore Mine is located about 30km away from Kathu. The mine has the capacity to produce 14 million tonnes of export quality iron following the completion of phase 2 of the Khumani expansion project. Conventional drilling and blasting take place in a series of pits before the ore is transported via haul trucks to the crushing facilities and then conveyed overland to be stockpiled and subsequently beneficiated. The  resultant product is exported via the Saldanha Bay Bulk Terminal.
