Background

Debswana controls most of the diamond operations in Botswana including two of its most prolific mines, Orapa and Jwaneng. With the completion of the Cut-8 in September 2012, Jwaneng became the largest open-pit diamond mine, by value, in the world. The flagship facility for Debswana, the mine is operated under the Anglo American portfolio managed by Debswana and contributes 60-70% of the company’s revenue.

In addition to diamonds there is also some production of copper, gold, nickel and soda ash – these have held traditionally significant (though smaller) roles in the national economy.

The open pit operations at Jwaneng have currently reached a depth of 452 metres and the company predicts they will reach 816 metres by 2034. Three separate volcanic pipes comprise the resources mined and annual production is currently at 12.7 million carats treated per year. Current projects include a tailings resource treatment plant and the Jwaneng Resource Expansion Project, both aimed at increasing the LOM of the mine.
