MTE Emalahleni 2024, Mpumalanga

Loading Events

Emalahleni, previously known as Witbank, falls under the Emalahleni Local Municipality in Mpumalanga. The name Emalahleni translates to ‘place of coal’, a commodity that has become synonymous with the town. Due to the large concentration of high-quality coal in the area, there are more than 22 collieries present, owned and operated by a variety of companies. Additionally, there are a number of Eskom power stations in the area which rely on a steady supply of coal from the mines – which in turn generates good business for the local residents.

Seven of the local collieries are owned by Thungela Resources, ranging from opencast operations at Khwezela and Mafube, to underground mining at Greenside and Goedehoop. Zibulo Colliery uses both opencast and underground operations, with mechanised bord and pillar methods for underground mining and truck and shovel methods for the open pits. Other operations include Isibonelo and the Rietvlei.

Another major company in the area is Glencore, with three opencast operations at Impunzi, Tweefontein and Goedgevonden. These complexes produce thermal coal for both export and domestic power generation.

Seriti Resources operates three large scale opencast and underground mines in the area, namely Khutala, Klipspruit and MMS. The company is 91% black owned and supports environmental and community development in the region. The company is also Eskom’s largest coal provider – roughly 32% annually.
