It’s DUE: Develop, Unite and Empower, is the theme of the annual Women and Leadership in Mining conference taking place from 30 to 31 August in Johannesburg, organised by Pinpoint Stewards.
The women-owned conference company’s mission is to create a platform that gives visibility to current and upcoming leaders within the mining sector. “If industry has committed to double the amount of women in mining by 2025, everyone must play their part to ensure women are seen for their contribution in the sector and this conference will do exactly that – identify future leaders,” says co-owner Sudhira Sewsunker.

Reliable leadership
The conference will address topics such as, “Becoming a reliable leader in your relationships – planning, prioritisation, decision making, and industry knowledge.” This theme will be addressed by Mogaleadi Seabela, section manager, Anglo American Kumba Iron Ore, also one of the 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining selected by WiM UK in 2022.

Climbing the ladder
The first woman to be appointed as general manager Mining at Impala Platinum, Nonkululeko Mabuza, will share her journey as a woman in SA Mining with attendees. She is also the first woman to be elected to the council of the Association of Mine Managers of South Africa.

Overcoming barriers
Khutjo Ivy Lebelo, senior mining engineer, De Beers Group, Venetia Mine will show leaders how to overcome barriers such as the lack of career advancement in the mining sector and how you can be part of the change by taking the opportunities presented.

Advancing women representation
Mbali Milanzi, commercial director, Tshepa Basadi Group, is supporting the conference as exhibition sponsor and will discuss “advancing women representation by aligning project decisions in the interest of women” and the impact it will have. She is passionate about improving the participation of women in project management within the mining industry.

Giving back:
The conference seeks to elevate the issue of GBV and mentorship and therefore a percentage of the profits for the conference will be donated, to both the Lighthouse Baby shelter and WiMSA.
