It’s DUE: Develop, Unite and Empower, is the theme of the annual Women and Leadership in Mining conference taking place from 30 to 31 August in Johannesburg, organised by Pinpoint Stewards.

The women-owned conference company’s mission is to create a platform that gives visibility to current and upcoming leaders within the mining sector. “If industry has committed to double the amount of women in mining by 2025, everyone must play their part to ensure women are seen for their contribution in the sector and this conference will do exactly that – identify future leaders,” says co-owner Sudhira Sewsunker.

Reliable leadership

The conference will address topics such as, “Becoming a reliable leader in your relationships – planning, prioritisation, decision making, and industry knowledge.” This theme will be addressed by Mogaleadi Seabela, section manager, Anglo American Kumba Iron Ore, also one of the 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining selected by WiM UK in 2022.

Climbing the ladder

The first woman to be appointed as general manager Mining at Impala Platinum, Nonkululeko Mabuza, will share her journey as a woman in SA Mining with attendees. She is also the first woman to be elected to the council of the Association of Mine Managers of South Africa.

Nonkululeko Mabuza’s top 3 achievements:

Overcoming barriers

Khutjo Ivy Lebelo, senior mining engineer, De Beers Group, Venetia Mine will show leaders how to overcome barriers such as the lack of career advancement in the mining sector and how you can be part of the change by taking the opportunities presented.

Advancing women representation

Mbali Milanzi, commercial director, Tshepa Basadi Group, is supporting the conference as exhibition sponsor and will discuss “advancing women representation by aligning project decisions in the interest of women” and the impact it will have. She is passionate about improving the participation of women in project management within the mining industry.

  • Authored a published paper entitled, ‘The effects of project management on organisations with centralised procurement in the matrix mining organisation’ and presented it at the Project Management Institute Australia Conference in Sydney, Australia.
  • Building Tshepa Basadi, along with her business partner, from an EME with three employees to a sustainable high growth company with 70 employees in 6 years
  • Improved and maintained Tshepa Basadi’s B-BBEE scorecard from a Level 2 to Level 1 B-BBEE contributor for past 4 Years

Shaping and uplifting more women leaders

Superintendent Mining, EXXARO, Dolly Masilela will delve into “What is mentorship and what it is not; and how to shape and uplift more women into leadership roles while taking ownership of your career and transitioning from colleague to leader”.

Dolly Masilela’s top 3 achievements:

  • The privilege to coach and mentor young/upcoming talent

Giving back:

The conference seeks to elevate the issue of GBV and mentorship and therefore a percentage of the profits for the conference will be donated, to both the Lighthouse Baby shelter and WiMSA.
