The Artisanal & Small-Scale Miners (ASM) and Emerging Miners (EM) sector plays a vital role in South Africa’s industrial development. Mintek, South Africa’s national mineral research organisation, in partnership with the Department of Minerals Resources and Energy (DMRE) and the Wits School of Mining Engineering is set to host the first One-Day Artisanal & Small-Scale Miners/Emerging Miners Symposium on 11 April 2024. The symposium seeks to bring together key stakeholders to collaborate on efforts to promote the sector’s growth.

Taking place at Mintek – which is celebrating its 90th year – the symposium is aimed at addressing the various challenges faced by the sector across different stages of the mining value chain.

Despite being recognised as a vehicle for social and economic development of historically disadvantaged South Africans, the ASM and ESM sector does not have the necessary institutional bodies to promote their growth and development. This symposium aims to establish a robust structure in collaboration with key stakeholders that will provide comprehensive support to the sector and drive progress.

Through a panel discussion, these key stakeholders comprising of industry leaders including Mintek, DMRE, Council for Geoscience (CGS), Wits School of Mining Engineering, Mining Qualification Authority (MQA), Mine Health & Safety Council (MHSC), Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), and Minerals Council South Africa (Minerals Council) will extensively discuss and explore issues and solutions.

The symposium’s mission is to foster connections for the sector with researchers, geoscientists, policymakers, industry regulators, investors and financiers, and advance knowledge-transfer in the mining industry.

The discussion forum will see experts join forces to help emerging miners and equip them with the knowledge to leverage new and emerging technologies, giving them access to information on how to get funding and available training opportunities. Additionally, the symposium will seek to empower them on potential funding opportunities available to SMMEs.
